Building little robots out of junk parts is a fun distraction for me. I find the pieces at garage sales and flea markets, and often just lying on the curb. I’ve really mastered the technique of throwing the vehicle into park, jumping out to grab the valuable find, and chucking it into the back, all before the traffic catches up to me. It’s not uncommon for friends to bring me broken clocks and small, interesting parts to take apart and repurpose.
In some respects, the robots represent a more innocent time in our country’s history, when people were inventing machines out of metal instead of plastic. I also like the idea of taking something people would normally throw away and turn it into a whimsical piece of art. But mostly, they’re just fun to make. Each one has its own personality.
